Ah yes, here it is. This is a post I've been waiting to talk about for a long time. On top of it being one of my all time favorite Erika pictures even to this day, this picture also holds a very special distinction. This is the very first picture that I have ever commissioned. As a special bonus to celebrate this picture, I added a never before seen animation manip of this picture at the bottom. And with that, we got a lot to talk about!
Not only is this the first ever picture I've commissioned, but this is also the start of the influx of pictures related to me. While there have been numerous pictures I've posted on this blog already, they were actually pretty decently spaced out time wise. For reference, this picture came out in late 2014, and if you might recall in the very first post that the first Erika picture was in 2011. And as some of you may know, it was around 2015 where a lot of pictures of myself started showing up. It can more or less be traced back to this commission.
So, for some of you older hypno art fans you might've traced your first hypnosis art pictures back to some of the of classic artists. Jimryu, P.Chronos, Sleepymaid, RenaissanceOfChaos, etc. They've been drawing hypnosis art for quite a while after all! I couldn't really say what the first hypno art I saw was, but I was absolutely a big fan of those artists I just listed off. And it just so happens that around this time period of 2014 RenaissanceOfChaos randomly opened up commissions. RoC was actually one of my favorite artists at the time, and even now I'm still a big fan! In fact in an earlier blog post I talked about one of my favorite hypnosis images being about hypno eye tentacles right? Well it was actually a picture by RoC. Specifically this one.
When I saw that I knew I HAD to get something done. However the reason I hadn't commissioned anyone prior to this specific moment was actually due to a personal reason. Let's just say my bank and Paypal don't really get along. Anyways that hadn't really changed at this point in time either. But even with that said, I could not pass up an opportunity to get commission done by one of my favorite artists of all time. So in the end, I actually ended up asking a friend to pay for the commission in my place. Of course I paid my friend back though with cash since we lived close to each other. That friend of mine has been paramount to the Erika pictures, because even to this day I still can't really use Paypal. All my commissions have been fronted by him.
But yes, with that I had secured a spot with one of my favorite artists! Obviously I was ecstatic. So naturally, for my choice of the commission I wanted something similar to my favorite piece by said artist. That's why we have more hypno tentacles! When I think about it, it was an interesting choice on my part, since I usually like to commission artists with their strengths. RoC is an incredible Kaa artist so usually I'd go with something like that... And of course I do in the future. But I suppose for my first commission going with something based off of something I loved was the immediate knee-jerk reaction.
As for the posing and all that though, RoC handled it. I wasnt too specific with what exactly I wanted with the picture. If I recall, it was something like "A picture similar to the one you did before, but with myself instead." And with that vague information to work with, I can say he absolutely delivered. The posing is fantastic and I couldn't have thought of anything better myself. As I said before this was and still is, one of my all time favorite pictures of myself. And as something that also happens to be my first commission ever, I couldn't be happier!
I'd also like to mention that back in these days I didn't really have any character sheets, or even very many other works to base the pictures from. And so whenever I asked an artist to "draw me" I usually ended up sending a photo reference. Nowadays I don't do that (so please don't ask) but even then, a lot of artists never really got the hair style quite right. However for this picture RoC also absolutely nailed the hair style as well. Whenever someone asks me what hair style they should use for me when drawing me, because there are so many. This is one of the pictures I refer to as a reference.
As bit of a bonus note though, I did mention there was a mini animation attached to this blog post. I asked a third party artist named ivatent to animate this particular piece, as well as increase the resolution. The original drawing was a bit on the small side after all... But yes this manipulation was also funded by me. I only did it just because it'd be a way to spice up my original commission, but when I decided to take this blog more seriously, I figured I could also share it here as a bonus!
